World Book Day 2018

This week the World Book Day celebrations began at School in earnest; at Senior School staff pinned a ‘currently reading’ sign to their door or wore a copy of their favourite book pinned to their back, both devices opening the corridors and classrooms up for discussion and debate. Meanwhile, at Infant and Junior School, the children got in involved in the 'I Got Caught Reading' Competition.

Continuing the celebration of World Book Day today, the students at the Infant and Junior Schools have been enthusiastically taking part in events throughout the day. From Nursery to Year 6 the pupils were asked to come to School dressed up as their favourite book character.

The day began with a carnival atmosphere as the pupils joined in a parade; showing off their costumes on the catwalk, they danced along to the sounds of their favourite pop songs whilst their friends and teachers clapped and cheered them on. Everyone had worked so hard on their costumes and the effect was vibrant and exciting which brought all of the book characters to life.

In the morning, teachers from the Senior School visited some of the classes to read aloud from their favourite children’s novel and in the afternoon Year 6 students walked from Junior to Infant School to read with some of the younger pupils. It is always lovely to see and the children enjoy it immensely.

Other fun activities evolved around the book chosen by each class; in Year 1 their books were based on Superheroes and so the children made superhero masks and talked about their favourite heroes.

In Year 2 they chose ‘The Enormous Crocodile’ which accounted for Mrs Barrett’s amazing crocodile costume and the students discussed the characters and had to design a ‘Wanted’ poster warning unsuspecting children to look out for a very grumpy crocodile! In other classes too books were read aloud and discussed and stories brought to life.

The students in Year 5 selected an author and discussed one of the books they had written, whilst Year 6 students critiqued their books and had to complete a quiz.

All of the children in the Infant and Junior Schools also had to carry a ‘Poem in their Pocket’ which at certain times of the day they had to read out to fellow classmates.

Everyone agreed it was a fun filled day which may just inspire a new generation of young authors and publishers. But that’s a story still waiting to be told….
