The aim of the dance lessons at Westholme is to develop musicality, a healthy body, freedom of movement and self-expression through the enjoyment of dance.
Dance and ballet classes at the Nursery and Infant School are run by Heather Burns (FISTD & Examiner).
In nursery the children work on their coordination through the introduction of simple dance movements based around stories with Melody and Milligan Bear. The children work towards their Melody and Milligan Bear awards which are awarded at the end of each year.
In the Nursery ‘Melody Movement’ introduces the children to dance and movement using natural actions of the body such as running, walking, jumping, hopping skipping and galloping. The children are also introduced to counting, colour, shape recognition, vocabulary and language skills.
In Pre School it is a structured syllabus to aid the children’s physical development, coordination, spatial awareness, creativity and self-expression. The children learn to work individually, with a partner or as a group. ‘First Ballet with Melody and Milligan Bear’ is the follow on syllabus for Reception introducing simple ballet techniques with creativity.
Year 1 and 2 follow the junior ballet which introduces barre work, centre practice, allegro and creative ballet themes to inspire young children.
In house assessments/award days are held at the end of each year.
